The Cost of Simply Existing in 2026

Money has become the center of everything. Every decision, every plan, every outing somehow circles back to it. You need money to eat, to sleep comfortably, to drive, to raise kids, to exist. Even “simple” things aren’t simple anymore. Walking out the front door somehow costs money before the day even really starts.

And honestly? It’s exhausting.

Sometimes I sit and think about how strange it is that a piece of paper — something that can literally disintegrate in a washing machine — has such a choke hold on nearly every human being alive. Entire moods can change over numbers on a screen. Relationships struggle because of it. People lose sleep because of it. Dreams get delayed because of it.

What happened to simpler systems? Trading skills. Trading goods. Helping each other because communities actually leaned on each other. Somewhere along the line, survival became monetized. Every hobby became a “side hustle.” Every talent became something you’re expected to profit from just to stay afloat.

And maybe the wildest part of adulthood is realizing that $100 barely feels real anymore.

As a kid, $100 felt huge. It felt rich. Like you could buy whatever you wanted and still have money left over. Now? You can spend $100 in less than an hour without even buying anything exciting. Groceries. Gas. One bill payment. A quick trip to the store where you somehow leave wondering how shampoo, snacks, and paper towels totaled almost triple what you expected.

How are people actually getting ahead right now?

Seriously.

How are families surviving while rent climbs higher, groceries double in price, and wages barely move? How are people saving for homes while struggling to afford eggs and electricity? How is anyone building a future when most of us are busy trying to survive the current month?

It feels like everyone is carrying invisible financial anxiety all the time. Constant mental math. Constant sacrifice. Constant “we’ll wait until next paycheck.” And yet somehow we’re still expected to function normally through all of it.

Still expected to smile.
Still expected to keep producing.
Still expected to keep going.

I don’t think people are lazy. I think people are tired.

Tired of survival mode.
Tired of choosing between necessities.
Tired of feeling behind no matter how hard they work.

And maybe that’s why so many people feel disconnected from life lately. Because it’s hard to fully enjoy anything when your brain is constantly calculating cost.

I don’t have some magical financial advice to end this with. I’m figuring it out too. But I know I’m not the only person laying awake at night wondering how life became this expensive just to exist.
